Publikumsmagnet seit 2023

HWA EVO: An icon of touring car racing, reinterpreted

The rebirth of a legend: In mid-July, the Nationales Automuseum welcomed an exciting addition to its collection: the HWA EVO. Chassis No. 1 of this top-of-the-range high-performance car was personally delivered to Ewersbach by Hans Werner Aufrecht, founder of AMG and HWA. Starting on 23 July, the HWA EVO will be on display as part of a new special exhibition in the museum’s Market Square.

The HWA EVO draws on the design and philosophy of the Mercedes-Benz 190 E 2.5-16 Evolution II, one of the best-known homologation sports cars of the DTM (German Touring Car Masters) era. At the Nationales Automuseum, the new vehicle takes its place alongside vehicles that mark key milestones in its history: the Mercedes-Benz 190 E 2.5-16 Evolution II with chassis numbers #1 and #500, Klaus Ludwig’s DTM championship-winning car from the 1992 season, the HWA EVO development prototype PT01, and the HWA EVO.R – the motorsport variant of the HWA EVO, which competed in the 2026 ADAC RAVENOL 24h at the Nürburgring. This creates a unique ensemble that brings together the past, present and future of HWA’s development.

Vote for the Model Car of the Year!

The trade magazine ‘Modellfahrzeug’ will be choosing the best miniature cars for the 36th time. The readers’ poll will allow collectors, model-makers and car enthusiasts to choose the winners of the ‘Model Car Oscars’ in 33 categories. They range from sports cars and classic cars to racing cars, tractors, model kits and slot racers. The Nationales Automuseum will also be represented. In the ‘1:87 Classic Cars’ category (HO scale), a Wiking model of the legendary Ferrari 412 P – of which only four are believed to have been built worldwide – is among the nominees in the readers’ poll. The nomination reflects the unique selection of high-quality model cars available in our museum shop. Entries for the readers’ poll close on 25 September. The awards ceremony will be held in November at the Nationales Automuseum, as on two previous occasions.

From the collection: Lancia Delta Integrale 16V

When the high-powered Group B cars were phased out in 1986, Lancia flourished in the more production-oriented Group A. The Delta, which by then had come into its own, now set the standard: Between 1987 and 1992, Lancia won six World Championship titles in a row, a level of success rarely seen in rallying. The Delta Integrale 16V on display at the Nationales Automuseum epitomises the finest engineering of that time. Its two-litre turbo engine officially delivered 291 bhp in rally mode, although the real figure was probably far higher; however, traction, drivability and reliability were the decisive factors. The model shown is a rarely-seen lightweight version designed for road rallies: an acid-dipped body – and therefore with an exceptionally thin skin – thin windows, an unsynchronised six-speed gearbox – and all weighing in at just around 1,090 kilograms. Didier Auriol drove the car to second place at the 1989 Monte Carlo Rally. He also won with it in Corsica. Later, he received the red, Martini-liveried car as an official press vehicle.

New in the shop: Special editions of the Ferrari 330 P3/412 P

To celebrate the anniversary, three special-edition Ferrari 330 P3/412 P models from the time-honoured Wiking brand are now available exclusively from the museum shop. These are replicas of the 1966 winning cars from the 1,000-kilometre races at Monza (#14) and Francorchamps (#1). And then there is the yellow car from the Belgian Ecurie Francorchamps, which competed in the 1967 Daytona 24 Hours. These models add to the growing range of exclusive miniature cars, posters, T shirts and memorabilia, all of which can only be purchased at the museum (no shipping). The range also includes four books published on the occasion of the special exhibitions: ‘100 Years of the 24 Hours of Le Mans – the Myth, the Heroes, the Cars’, ‘Ferrari – Masterpieces for the Race Track and the Road’, ‘Grand Prix – Icons of the Elite Class’ and ‘Rally Legends – A Journey Through Time on Tarmac, Gravel and Snow’, all written by Jörg Walz.
